Cocaine is already one of the most dangerous drugs out there because it is so popular and used by so many. It is a highly addictive stimulant drug. It is extracted from the leaves of the coca plant that is native to South America. Then they turn it into cocaine, and that is what ends up being bought off the streets. If you’re lucky, that is.
Cocaine is often mixed with other drugs to extend the dealers supply, and sometimes these other compounds can have dangerous effects. There is, of course, a difference between crack and cocaine. Crack is formed by mixing cocaine and water and baking soda and can be even more addictive than plain cocaine.
What Cocaine Is Made Of
To understand a bit what we are talking about it is important to understand the makeup of cocaine. The cocaine chemical structure is made up of a few different chemicals. Cocaine has a chemical substance called a benzoylmethylecgonine. This is what is found in the coca plant, or Erythroxylum coca.
Often coca leaves are chewed as a light stimulant close to caffeine. It is only when it is extracted and purified that it can become dangerously addictive. Basically, the leaves are processed into the powder we know as cocaine.
The cocaine is then refined even more, and that is what is sold on the streets.
Cocaine Is Often Cut With Filler Substances
It is not often that pure cocaine is found when you’re buying on the street. Many addicts know that they are buying cocaine mixed with other things. Usually, cocaine is combined with other substances that can actually make up 80 percent of what you are buying.
This is because cocaine is potent on its own and mixing it with other products can extend how much money that dealers can make.
The problem overall with this tactic is that many dealers mix different substances with cocaine. They often use any white powder, and this can really change how cocaine affects or interacts with someone.
Some of the substances used to cut cocaine include:
– Additives with psychoactive or numbing effects. These can really increase the risk of using cocaine.
– Poisonous substances that can be toxic and don’t effect psychoactively.
– White powders that only look like cocaine and can weaken the effects of the cocaine.
When people become addicted to cocaine, it can be hard to stop using it. That’s because the body grows dependent on the drug and things it can’t function without it. If they stop using the drug then they can go through withdrawal.
Often withdrawal is what makes quitting an addiction more difficult because they can be very unpleasant.
Some common cocaine withdrawal symptoms include:
– Difficulty concentrating
– Slowed thinking
– Slowed activity or physical fatigue after activity
– Inability to experience sexual arousal
– Anhedonia, or the inability to feel pleasure
– Depression or anxiety
– Suicidal thoughts or actions
– Vivid, unpleasant dreams or nightmares
– Physical symptoms, such as chills, tremors, muscle aches, and nerve pain
– Increased craving for cocaine
– Increased appetite
